Google Pixel 9 Review: Features, Pricing, Verdict

At the Made by Google event 2024, Google announced its intentions to bring the wonders of artificial intelligence to more people. This is now available through the updated Gemini assistant and Android operating system on the tech giant's latest range of Pixel phones: the Google Pixel 9.

The most recent Pixel series was announced at Google's ninth annual event and released just over a week later on August 22 2024, with four different devices to choose from. Alongside the regular Google Pixel 9 comes the Pro models, including a brand new Pro XL that sports larger screen and battery sizes.

The latest addition to the Pixel line offers powerful new AI features compared to its predecessor, plus improved design, display, camera, and software functions. Are these upgrades worth the extra $100, though, or is it best sticking with the Pixel 8 if you already own it?

Design

One of the most noticeable differences between the Pixel 9 and previous models is the matte aluminum frame and polished glass back, made from Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The Pixel 8 used the original tough Gorilla Glass Victus, but the newer version is built with even more durability in mind – it can survive drops of up to 1 meter on concrete surfaces!

The base model isn't quite as premium as the Pixel 9 Pro, which has a glossy metal frame and matte back. However, it still looks sleek, especially in its Obsidian, Porcelain, Wintergreen, and Peony color options.

The Pixel 9 also follows in the footsteps of other modern flagship phones, including the latest Apple iPhone and Samsung devices, by replacing the usual curves with flat sides.

But something that's completely different is the rear camera bar bump, which houses the device's cameras. The dedicated island sticks out a little, but makes the phone easier to grip. This is especially important for drop protection!

Another great hardware upgrade is the ultrasonic fingerprint reader, which is much more accurate than other Google phones.

Cameras

The redesigned camera island isn't the only photography upgrade you'll experience with the Google Pixel 9. It does, however, feature the same dual camera setup, with a 50MP Main lens that offers 2x zoom, plus a 10.5 MP selfie camera.

Where the improvements come is with the signature Ultrawide camera, which is 48MP rather than 12MP, with enhanced Macro Focus. But if you're looking for an extra Telephoto camera, you'll need to go with the Pixel 9 Pro. This Telephoto lens is just 10.8MP, yet capable of 20x digital zoom and 5x optical zoom.

Many of the upgrades from the Pixel 8 come courtesy of AI  in thel camera app. Add Me, for instance, ensures that you're always included in group shots – even if you were the one taking the photo!

Display

The Pixel’s 6.3-inch screen size may go back to the Google Pixel 7, but the quality certainly doesn't. Instead, it includes an Actua OLED display with a 60 to 120Hz refresh rate for a smoother picture!

Where the Pixel 9 scores huge points is with its impressive 2700-nit brightness, which certainly rivals the iPhone 16's 2000-nit display. This makes it much easier to see what's on your phone, even in really bright conditions!

Software, Performance & Operating System

The Google Pixel 9 currently runs on the Android 15 operating system, which offers a new Theft Detection Lock to protect your data, plus a locked private space and improved Low Light Boost for the camera. If you do make the upgrade, your device will utilize the new Android 16 OS when it's fully released later on in 2025.

The Pixel 9 also contains the Tensor G4 chipset, the fourth iteration of Google's line of processors. This powers the Gemini AI features, including Pixel Studio, which allows you to create images from scratch based on inputted keywords and themes.

Another great new feature is the Pixel Screenshots app. This quickly scans your gallery to find specific screenshots – something that's particularly useful if you're looking for that one key piece of information, like an old recipe or address! 

This state-of-the-art processor, along with the 12GB of RAM (4GB more than the iPhone 16!) facilitates some of the smoothest scrolling and app performance of any Google's Pixel phones to date. Invest in the Pixel 9 and you'll also enjoy free access to 7 years of software updates and security patches!

Battery Life

With the release of the Google Pixel 9 comes a slightly bigger battery capacity. The newer model includes a 4700 mAh battery, compared to the Pixel 8's 4575 mAh. Coupled with the new Tensor chip, this offers an improved power efficiency. Google claims that the battery can last for up to 24 hours!

It also has a maximum 27W wired charging speed, which powers up your device to 100% in less than an hour. If you prefer wireless charging, benefit from 15W QI speeds too.

Final Verdict: Is the Pixel 9 Worth it?

The Pixel 8 may have been slightly more compact, but the Google Pixel 9 offers a more premium design and finish. It's not just a pretty-looking phone either; the 9 also offers improved durability thanks to the inclusion of Gorilla Glass Victus 2, plus a redesigned camera bar.

Like all new Pixel phones, the Pixel 9 does come with a $100 price increase from its predecessor. The 128GB model retails at $799, while the 256GB costs $899. The question is: Is it worth this price hike?

If you're new to the Pixel line, the 9 makes a great investment. Faster software processing and a better battery life facilitate the exciting new Gemini AI features. Plus, the 2700-nit maximum brightness means that this device rivals the best Apple and Samsung smartphones on the market right now. And don't forget about the improved 48MP Ultrawide camera!

However, if you already own the Pixel 8, you might not get much from making the upgrade. The Pixel 9's predecessor is already a pretty high-quality device, featuring a great camera setup and a fast performance that will certainly last for years to come.
